Many people do not pay attention to how much they are spending until they get into a situation where money is tight for them. It is important to make the most of your money at all times. If you save money on certain things you will have more money for other things. Shopping smarter doesn’t need to take a lot of extra time.
Shop with a list
One of the easiest ways to save when shopping is to have a plan. Either keep a running list of items that you need as you are getting low on items or sit down before you go shopping and make a list of what you are shopping for. If you have kids, then keep a list of items they may need in the future in your purse, and include sizes you can look at when you find items on sale.
Keep track of sale cycles in your area. Most grocery stores and other stores run sales weekly. Remember, just because an item is in the sale flyer, it may not be the lowest price available. When you are shopping, keep an eye out for unadvertised specials or manager’s specials. There may be items that were not in the flyer or items that are nearing their sell by date that are reduced in price.
If you usually purchase a certain brand of items consider trying less expensive alternatives. Some times the other brand will not taste as good, but in many cases they will.
Stock up to save
Stock up on items that you use regularly when you find them on sale. By stocking on items you also save time from having to make a special trip to the store. Also, by reducing you trips to the store, you may also reduce the temptation of impulse purchases.
Look for alternatives
Consider shopping at dollar stores, discount stores, thrift and consignment stores. Many items at thrift and consignment stores are brand new with the original tags still on them. It may take more time and your selection may not be as large but the savings may make it worth the extra time and effort. In recent years, dollar stores and discount stores have been expanding the selection of items they offer. Many also offer dairy and frozen food items.
With a little time and effort in shopping smarter you may be able to save a considerable amount of money to make it go further.
